5 Superhero Superfoods

img_1903For his birthday, my 9 year old son received tickets to attend the New York Comic Con yesterday.  For those of you who may not be aware of this, Comic Con is a huge convention for comic book enthusiasts. Fans of the spin-off films and superhero characters that appear in many of these books also attend.

Food can act as a superhero too with certain foods bringing well-being and a sense of happiness when eaten.  I have a list of a some of the best smile inducing foods which won’t leave a giant dent in your wallet either:

Dark Chocolate:  Chocolate contains Phenylethylamine which is a hormone that makes you feel happy.  Eating dark chocolate with low sugar levels and high cacao content can lower your levels of stress and pain because it releases endorphins in the brain.

Bananas:  They  are great snack to improve your mood due to high levels of tryptophan that converts into serotonin – a mood-lifting neurotransmitter.

Salmon:  The Omega 3 fatty acid DHA and vitamin D in salmon have been proven to increase levels of serotonin in the brain.

Asparagus: Asparagus is loaded with healthy nutrients and is rich in folic acid that helps to create new cells & regulate serotonin levels in your body.

Honey: Honey is a natural health aid that can help you to sleep better. It is rich in amino acids that produce serotonin in your body to increase your feelings of good mood and happiness.
